Developers discussing charts on a screen

Useful product dashboards answer a short list of recurring questions: Are we activating new users? Are they returning? Which surfaces drive upgrades? Everything else can live in exploratory notebooks.

Lead with definitions. Place the activation and retention formulas where the eye lands first. Ambiguous chart titles are how meetings dissolve into semantic arguments.

Limit each audience—engineers, product, leadership—to a page they can scan in under five minutes. Deep dives belong one click away, not on the landing view.

Schedule a quarterly prune. Remove charts nobody opened, and archive experiment panels after decisions are logged. Stale tiles erode trust faster than missing ones.
